Blog 8 - Emphasis and Contrast

This week in class, we discussed emphasis and contrast. Emphasis is the purposeful development of a focal point. It establishes hierarchy and gives a sense of drama, balance, and personality. It also determines how a viewer perceives or feels about a space and can be achieved through texture, lighting, furniture, view, or architectural details.

Contrast occurs when two or more opposing elements or characteristics are present in a space. While cohesiveness is important, it can tend to blend things together, making the space monotonous. Contrast adds balance through different elements. It can be achieved with color, shape, material, texture, or style. Contrast creates visual interest and can achieve harmony when used correctly.

This week in Chapter 8 of Sketching Interiors, we learned about rendering interiors with markers and the importance of being able to draw quick sketches to present your design concept quickly and effectively. "The key point is to sketch your object and the space with accurate perspective. If the perspective and proportion are not correct at the beginning, then it is not worth spending the time and effort to render the drawing." Our sketch for this week involved practicing quick sketching and rendering the drawings with markers.

  1. Katherine,

I really liked your blog this week! Although it was short, I think it did a good job of communicating what we learned this week from our reading. I also really like your sketch of pg.194 and the color scheme you used! I think it was nicely done and you controlled the markers really well. I know they can be tricky - I struggle with it too - but you did a nice job!
